Kim Chin-Gibbons’ album release Coming Out, Math-Rock & Mourning Murder marks the culmination of a deeply personal project more than five years in the making. The record is shaped by her life inside the progressive rock world of Sunset Mission, where long outdoor rehearsals at Green Hill Park and marathon practice sessions forged both technical precision and emotional depth. Those years of collective discipline and creative trust form the backbone of this release, which moves fluidly between intricate rhythmic structures and vulnerable, narrative songwriting.
Many of the album’s foundational riffs were first written for She Shreds Media’s One Riff A Day competition (#1RAD2022), where Chin-Gibbons earned third place nationwide, drawing attention for her command of complex guitar language and expressive tone. Beyond its technical brilliance, the album is unmistakably autobiographical—tracing themes of coming out, searching for love, and the need for musical rigor, while also grappling with profound loss. Several pieces process the grief surrounding the murder of Jana Ivanova Abromowitz, a close friend from North Star: Self-Directed Learning for Teens, lending the music a rare emotional weight that resonates far beyond the notes themselves.
For this album-release performance, Chin-Gibbons is joined by an ensemble of Sunset Mission members, bringing the material to life with the power and nuance it demands. While the band draws inspiration from progressive and experimental heavyweights like Animals as Leaders, Pain of Salvation, and Meshuggah, the heart of the set leans into Chin-Gibbons’ baritone-guitar, singer-songwriter sensibility—echoing artists such as Madison Cunningham, Yvette Young, and Tedeschi Trucks. The evening will also feature selections from Sunset Mission’s expansive studio works Journey to Lunar Castellum and Beyond Lunar Castellum, creating a dynamic, immersive night that bridges virtuosic prog, intimate storytelling, and fearless emotional honesty.
