What is De la Luz

De la Luz is a nonprofit performing arts and community campus in downtown Holyoke, bringing together live performance, creative work, community life, and hands-on learning.

Our two performance venues—the De la Luz Soundstage and the more intimate Divine Theater—host touring and regional artists, theater, dance, cultural celebrations, community gatherings, and private events.

But the people producing those experiences are part of the story, too.

Through the De la Luz Technical Arts Institute, young people from across the region learn alongside working professionals in live sound, lighting, stagecraft, video production, hospitality, culinary arts, and event production. They build skills through real public events, with opportunities to move into paid work and creative careers.

De la Luz is a project of LightWorks Collective, a nonprofit working at the intersection of education, access to the performing arts, and creative workforce development.

The idea is simple: great cultural spaces shouldn’t just be places where people come to watch. They can also be places where people learn, work, create, and find their way in.

Look around when you come to a show. Our events are produced by experienced professionals working alongside young people who are building real skills on the job.

You’ll see them greeting guests, working in the kitchen, running sound and lights, filming performances, and helping produce and promote events. Some are LightHouse students. Some are alumni. Others come to us from across the region through the De la Luz Technical Arts Institute.

Every show is both a great night out and a place where the next generation of artists, technicians, producers, and creative professionals gets to do the real thing.

We believe Holyoke should be a place where extraordinary artists come to perform—and where great live music, theater, dance, and cultural experiences are part of everyday community life.

De la Luz brings internationally acclaimed touring artists to Holyoke while creating a stage for remarkable artists from Western Massachusetts and the communities that call this region home.

Our programming crosses genres, generations, languages, and traditions. Some nights bring artists from across the world. Others put local musicians on stage, fill the room for salsa, celebrate Puerto Rican culture, or turn the theater over to a community gathering.

De la Luz is a cultural anchor in Western Massachusetts: a place worth traveling to, deeply rooted in Holyoke.

At De la Luz, presenting great performances and creating opportunities for young people are not separate programs. They make each other possible.

Every concert, performance, and event creates real work to be done—sound to mix, lights to run, food to prepare, guests to welcome, artists to support, and a show to produce. Young people learn those skills alongside professionals, in the middle of the real thing.

The shows make the learning possible. And young people help make the shows possible.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t.

Creative careers are often built through access: access to equipment, professional spaces, working artists and technicians, mentors, networks, and that crucial first chance to do the work for real.

Those opportunities are not equally available to everyone.

De la Luz helps close that gap by putting professional tools, real stages, working professionals, and paid opportunities within reach of young people across our region. At the same time, we’re creating a place where artists can perform, communities can gather, and people can encounter work and ideas they might not otherwise experience.

We believe access to culture matters. So does access to the work of making it.
